ChatGPT in Russia: How to Unblock It with a VPN in 2026

A complete guide to accessing ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini from Russia in 2026 — which country and protocol to choose, how to pay for ChatGPT Plus, and how to avoid account bans.

To open ChatGPT from Russia you need a VPN with a US or European exit and an obfuscated protocol — in 2026 that means AmneziaWG. OpenAI geo-blocks Russian IP addresses on its side, while Roskomnadzor in places disrupts plain WireGuard and VLESS, so the combination of a foreign server plus AmneziaWG currently gives the most reliable access to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other AI services.

In short: turn on a VPN with a US or Netherlands/Germany location, choose the AmneziaWG protocol (the AmneziaVPN app), then visit chat.openai.com — and the service will load. To pay for ChatGPT Plus from Russia you will need a foreign card or an intermediary. If you would rather skip the setup, Fiery also runs its own AI bot @FieryAI_Bot for image and video generation right inside Telegram — no VPN required.

Why ChatGPT does not work in Russia without a VPN

There are two independent reasons, and understanding them matters because each calls for a different fix.

  • Geo-blocking on OpenAI's side. Russia is not on the list of supported countries. From a Russian IP you see something like «ChatGPT is not available in your country», or you simply cannot sign up. The only fix is changing your IP to a supported country.
  • Local restrictions inside Russia. Access to some AI services and the infrastructure they rely on is periodically disrupted at the ISP level. So it is not enough to just «get a foreign IP» — you also need a protocol that resists blocking.

The same applies to Claude (Anthropic), Google Gemini, Perplexity, Midjourney and Sora: they either do not support Russia or require a stable foreign connection. We covered the reasons in detail in why VPN is blocked in Russia.

Which country to choose for ChatGPT

The main rule is to exit through a country that OpenAI officially supports. Practical picks for users in Russia:

  • United States — maximum compatibility with every AI service and the first to get new features. The downside is higher latency (ping).
  • Netherlands / Germany — the best balance: close to Russia, low ping, full support for ChatGPT and Claude. A solid default.
  • United Kingdom, France — workable alternatives if you specifically need European settings.

Avoid CIS, Turkey or exotic-country locations: even if the IP clears the geo-filter, new features and payments may behave unpredictably. And do not switch countries every day — sudden location jumps raise the odds of an account check.

Which protocol is most reliable in 2026

After Roskomnadzor moved to ASN- and subnet-level blocking in May 2026, plain WireGuard and VLESS Reality became unstable in places. That makes the choice of protocol more important than the choice of country right now.

ProtocolTraffic obfuscationResilience to blocking (2026)When to choose it for ChatGPT
AmneziaWG (AWG 2.0)Yes — traffic does not look like a VPNHighYour primary choice, especially if an ordinary VPN stopped opening ChatGPT
WireGuardNoMedium, unstable in placesIf it still works with your ISP; convenient on a router
VLESS RealityPartial (masquerades as TLS)MediumA desktop fallback

In short: start with AmneziaWG. For a full comparison see VPN protocols compared.

Step by step: how to open ChatGPT via VPN

On your phone or computer (app)

  1. Get a Fiery subscription in the Telegram bot @fiery_VPN_bot or in the mini-app, and receive your config.
  2. Install the AmneziaVPN app (for the AWG 2.0 protocol) on your device.
  3. Import the Fiery config into AmneziaVPN (via the link or file from the bot).
  4. Choose the United States or Netherlands location and connect.
  5. Open chat.openai.com or the ChatGPT app — it should now work.

On a router (Keenetic, MikroTik, OpenWRT)

The beauty of a home router is that ChatGPT works on every device in the network at once — TV, tablet, work laptop — with no separate app. Fiery's WireGuard runs on Keenetic, MikroTik and OpenWRT out of the box.

  1. Grab the Fiery WireGuard config for the desired location from the bot.
  2. Add it to your router's WireGuard section (on Keenetic: «Other connections → WireGuard»).
  3. Bring the tunnel up and, if needed, route the relevant devices or sites through it.

Per-model walkthroughs are in our VPN on a router guide. If WireGuard on the router stops opening ChatGPT due to blocking, keep AmneziaWG on your phone as a backup channel.

How to pay for ChatGPT Plus from Russia

A VPN removes the geo-block, but OpenAI will not accept a Russian card for a Plus subscription. Working options:

  • A foreign card (for example, issued in a friendly country) — the cleanest method if you have one.
  • A virtual card via an intermediary — services that issue foreign cards for paying subscriptions.
  • Gift codes / reseller intermediaries — paying through someone who sells Plus access. Be careful here and never hand over your account password.

Important: when paying, the VPN must be on and showing the same country as the card. Fiery itself, by contrast, is easy to pay for from Russia — with a MIR card, via SBP, or in crypto; more on that in how to pay for a VPN from Russia.

Common errors and how to avoid them

«ChatGPT is not available in your country»

The VPN is off, an unsupported country is selected, or the service «sees» your real IP leaking. Turn the VPN on, pick the US/Netherlands, and clear the site's cookies.

Account ban or block for using a VPN

The risk grows when the IP constantly changes country, a «dirty» shared IP is used, or there are suspicious logins. What lowers it: one consistent exit country, a stable personal server, and connecting from only one or two devices.

ChatGPT used to work and now it does not

Most often this is local blocking of the protocol, not an account problem. Switch from WireGuard/VLESS to AmneziaWG — in 2026 it gets around such blocks more reliably.

The site loads but is slow

Try a location closer to Russia (Netherlands/Germany instead of the US) and make sure no extra tunnels are running.

Can I use AI without a VPN at all?

Yes — for image and video generation there is the Fiery AI bot @FieryAI_Bot right in Telegram, and it works with no VPN. It is handy when you just want the result rather than access to ChatGPT itself.

Bottom line

For stable access to ChatGPT and other AI from Russia in 2026, exit through the US or the Netherlands, use the AmneziaWG protocol, keep one consistent country, and pay for Plus with a foreign card or through an intermediary. To try the setup without the hassle, get access at vpn.fiery.host or via the Telegram bot @fiery_VPN_bot — and for image and video generation without a VPN, check out @FieryAI_Bot.
